BATHE IN THE IDIOCY

( belief and science and bio and chambana )

I’d like to point out to Duane Kimme, in his Dec. 20 letter to the editor, that every statement he made was false. Natural selection cannot select for what does not already exist in the genome, making it an elimination of the weakest and not a creator of additional information.
No new biological system can have […]

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

( fnord and chambana and headlines )

Here’s hoping the News-Gazette headline writers will lay off the hard boozin’, at least until after work.

LET’S DO SOME CRIMES

( chambana )

Chambana police blotter:

Mobil Super Pantry, 810 W. Green St., reported theft Tuesday afternoon.
According to a police report, a 20-year-old man described as “goth” entered the business and stole a pack of strawberry-flavored cigars before fleeing.
No arrests had been made at the time of the report.

Wonder if he uses Sinister Strawberry “lip embalm.”

RADIO: CLIMATE AND FOOD PRODUCTION

( food and science and bio and chambana and climate )

Recommended listening, if you live on Earth. (It’s about half an hour long.)

You can’t see it and you can’t feel it, but ozone, one of the greenhouse gases associated with climate change, is causing a decrease of 20% to the soya crop in the United States of America.
Soya is the second biggest crop in the […]

18 OCTOBER 1924

( history and chambana )

Looking at the 1924 local papers was so much fun last week that I decided to do it again. I’m not promising to make this a weekly feature, but it could happen.
Daily Ilini
Pretty much the entire paper is on homecoming and the havoc it was likely to cause. The cities imported cops from Chicago to […]

ILLINOIS DIGITAL NEWSPAPER COLLECTION

( history and chambana )

The UIUC library’s Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection currently contains digitised versions of two local papers, the Daily Illini and the Urbana Daily Courier, from 1916 to 1925. Holy mackerel.
I just took a spin through the Courier dated 11 October 1924, and here are a few highlights:

Senator Robert M. LaFollette kicked off his presidential campaign in […]

ILLINOISANS: HELP TRACK FERAL BEES

( bio and chambana and photos and maps )

“We don’t know what is going on with pollinators because America has never deemed it important enough to try to keep track of its pollination resources,” Berenbaum said.
“Given that 90 crops in the U.S. agricultural sector depend on a single species of pollinator, and other crops depend on other pollinators, it would seem that for […]

ATTENTION, CHAMBANA NATIONALISTS

( politics and fnord and chambana )

Local letter to the editor:

There is a saying that dissent is the greatest form of patriotism.
That has to be the greatest piece of propaganda ever propagated in the media. This is responsible for the divide, the wedge that has weakened the ability for the government in this country to function efficiently.
The left undermines this administration […]
