FIVE YEARS

Posted on Tuesday 16 October 2007

There is one way we might be able to succeed in Iraq. To continue an operation of this intensity and duration, we would have to abandon our volunteer military for compulsory service. Short of that, our best option is to leave Iraq immediately. A scaled withdrawal will not prevent a civil war, and it will spend more blood and treasure on a losing proposition.

It’s true. We can’t even lose this thing properly without the draft. We probably need it just to lose in Afghanistan. How long after the 2008 elections…

I’d support a draft if they lowered the minimum age to sixteen, eliminated most disqualifications and gave parents a tax cut for each child serving the cause of freedom. A straight rebate would be even better. There’s nothing that says ‘democracy’ quite like a fat little pile of cash. While nothing could make up for the fear and sorrow of possibly losing L’il Pookie, I think $10,000 might assist with a mature perspective. Hell, even $5,000 is good.
