In Australia and New Zealand this day is known as ANZAC Day. It was on this day in 1915 that Australian and New Zealand troops, along with troops from other Commonwealth countries, landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, aiming to remove Turkey from the war. It was a military disaster, but from this campaign was forged the alliance that became known as The ANZACs - The Australian and New Zealand forces had been combined into the Australian and New Zealland Army Corps, hence the acronym ANZAC. The sacrifice of these troops is remembered annually in Australia, New Zealand and Turkey with a dawn service, the time when the amphibious landing was launched, and later in the day by a parade of ex- and serving service men and women in every city and town in the country. It is a moving and emotional day, especially as former enemies come together to remember their war dead. If you are interested in the campaign you can click on these links:

Ooh, thanks for the reminder. I’ll be sure to add it for next year.
